Solar PV: Powering India’s future – The way forward

ISA has planned its 2nd Solar PV Conclave on November 9, 2009 at HICC Hyderabad. The first Solar PV Conclave was held on September 29, 2008 at New Delhi and saw attendance of over 100 executives from across the country and outside.

Solar PV Conclave 2009 is planned to get a perspective of industry leaders on solar PV manufacturing and applications. This Conclave addresses the needs of this evolving sector in India; and gets together the key players, business leaders, technology experts and strategists on a common platform. The Conclave will provide delegates a unique insight from international and national speakers of repute on crucial issues.

Vision

India is generously endowed with a solar energy equivalent of over 5,000 trillion kWh per year; and has the potential to generate about 700 billion units. Supported by the tremendous interest in solar energy, and its potential, it will be one of the important sources for energy generation.

Domestic solar PV manufacturing will complement and support the deployment of solar energy. This will make India competitive and a most preferred global destination.

The depleting fossil fuel reserves, uncertainties in oil and gas prices, environmental concerns and the need for energy independence have heightened the significance of renewable energy over the last few years. Solar Photovoltaics (PV) is projected to emerge as an attractive alternate electric power source in the future. Globally, the industry has grown at a CAGR of around 45% over the past 5-7 years.

How about India? The use of solar energy for India assumes major importance, especially when viewed from the available potential and the acute power shortage faced by the country. India has abundant sunshine available and its solar reception amounts to 5000 trillion kWh per year with over 300 clear sunny days. The new energy plan has directed the focus on solar energy as a major contributor in the coming years.

Key issues addressed in the Conclave are:
  • What is the industry outlook? What are the key market opportunities specific to India?
  • What are the challenges in realizing early grid parity?
  • What is the roadmap for the manufacturing technologies?
  • Is India geared to position itself as a leading force in solar PV manufacturing?
  • As we are aware, finance costs in India being quite high, they form a sizable proportion of the total expenses limiting the attractive returns to the investors.
  • How do we address issues on securing competitive investments?
  • And, what are the pragmatic policies that Government of India should consider and implement in the short/medium and long terms?
