The interplay of design and manufacturing: The new game plan in the nanometer fields

Till recently, semiconductor design and manufacturing existed independently. One could design a chip with little or no knowledge about manufacturing and vice-versa. However, in today's 65 nm node technology, where the laws of physics have taken precedence, design and manufacturing cannot be isolated and are interdependent. It is essential for all funtions to work in parallel to allow collaborative design to succeed.

Towards a $200B domestic electronics market: Preparing for the Indian Grand-prix

At $10 - 12bn, the current electronics market in India may not be the largest, but it is one of the fastest growing markets in the world, with a CAGR of more than 24%. In the next decade, as India becomes a sizable electronics market, it will become a major player in the global semiconductor space. The rise in demand for semiconductors will provide an opportunity for India to build its own manufacturing base, leading to the development of a complete ecosystem for the semiconductor space in the country.

Session 3 4:00 - 5:30 pm

Country presentations: Global collaboration strategies
China
Korea
Singapore

The three key elements of the semiconductor space are software, design and manufacturing. The vector is incomplete when any of these elements are missing. China and Singapore are leading semiconductor manufacturing hubs. A collaboration betweeen these nations, which includes knowledge and expertise sharing, would help towards building a comprehensive global ecosystem for the semiconductor space.

  7:30 pm onwards

Networking dinner + cultural evening

Day 2: Thursday, February 9

Session 5 9:30 - 11:00 am

The interplay of software and design: The art of creating winning products

Chips have become an integral part of any system and cannot be isolated from it. Increased integration and complex software have made the chip more about software than hardware. Therefore, software and design cannot be isolated and are interdependent. This impacts existing business models in the semiconductor industry as there is an opportunity for increased risk-sharing between software, design and manufacturing.

Session moderator: Venkatesh V R

Session 6 1:30 - 3:00 pm

EDA Panel discussion - The 65-nm node: India’s opportunity to excel in the semiconductor industry

Transgressing technology in the semiconductor space has made the processes of software, design and manufacturing, increasingly interdependent and this interplay is causing disruptions in the chip design process. Therefore, it is essential that semiconductor industries take into consideration all three processes. Leveraging its competencies in software and design, if India also establishes a semiconductor manufacturing base, it will soon emerge as a strong global player in the semiconductor space with a potent combination of all three processes.

  3:00 - 3:30 pm   Coffee break
Session 7 3:30 - 5:30 pm

Next innings in semiconductor manufacturing: Looking into the decade ahead

Semiconductor technology is constantly changing. Each new technology has a life span of 3-4 years before it is displaced by newer technology. New capacities in terms of better manufacturing conditions, need to be created in order to meet these transgressing technologies. However, creating new capacities requires huge investments which cannot be undertaken by one single company. This opens up opportunities for the companies to collaborate for a common plant or go fabless.
