NXP Semiconductors India Pvt Ltd, which does semiconductor software and design work from India, has hit upon a novel idea to get business. It intends to interface between Indian telecom service providers with Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturers. This will help Indian telecom companies cut costs of their services and in the process NXP will get business from the manufacturers.

I F innovation has a heart, it’s probably a semiconductor, beating to the pace of Moore’s Law. Under this principle, named for the Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, the chip industry in the last four decades has doubled the number of transistors it crams onto a chip about every 18 months.

A Mercedes on the German autobahn suddenly encounters a storm. The rains lash at it, and the road is slippery. The car switches on the wipers, locks all the windows shut, reduces the car speed, and changes the mode from Sport to Normal. All this without any interference of the driver, while the child sleeping in the rear seat does not miss a beat. Chances are, the car is using software made by KPIT Cummins, an Indian company.

OEM semiconductor demand out of sync with sales, Gartner says

The top 10 OEMs consumed semiconductors worth $91 billion in 2007, a 1% rise over 2006, but less than the semiconductor industry's 3% growth between 2006 and 2007, according to a new report from Gartner. Gartner's preliminary market share analysis indicates that 2007 semiconductor revenue grew only 2.9%, while in the same year PC shipments grew 11% and cell phone shipments grew at double-digit rates.

Indians rate better on entrepreneurial skills than Chinese

ISA and SEMI Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Support Semiconductor Industry in India

The India Semiconductor Association (ISA), the only body representing the Indian semiconductor driven industry, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), the global industry association representing the equipment and materials suppliers to the semiconductor, display and PV industries. The MoU was signed by Poornima Shenoy, President, India Semiconductor Association and Stanley Myers, President and CEO, SEMI today.

Govt to focus on IT hardware manufacturing

Government has identified growth of electronics and IT hardware manufacturing as a thrust area, said President Pratibha Patil. “A special scheme has been announced to encourage semiconductor fabrication and other micro and nano technology manufacturing industries,” said Patil, in her address to the joint sitting of the two houses of the Parliament on the opening day of the Budget session on Monday.

Govt issues telecom licenses to nine telecos

In a move to achieve the target of 25-paise-per-local call rates, the government on Wednesday initiated the first step by issuing new telecom licenses to three players. Datacom Solutions, subsidiary of Videocon was granted the license as a fresh player in the mobile space.

Magma acquires analog IP specialist Sabio Labs

Magma Design Automation Inc. said Wednesday (Feb. 27) it has acquired Sabio Labs Inc., an analog intellectual property provider. Magma (San Jose, Calif.) said Sabio's analog IP process migration technology will be incorporated into its Titan Mixed-Signal Design Platform. The platform targets analog IP process migration and mixed-signal design.

TI grooms future DSP engineers in China universities

Recognizing that the quality of engineering education is critical for the industry to remain relevant and competitive, not a few top-tier semiconductor companies have forged strategic partnerships with the academe. Analog giant Texas Instruments Inc., for one, has been running its China University Program for the last 12 years. Dedicated to DSP technology, the commitment has resulted in 160 DSP labs and three technology centers distributed over 141 universities in China, benefiting 25,000 students every year and producing some 7,500 industrial engineers.

Automotive electronics market stays in drive

Databeans expects continued healthy growth for the automotive electronics market. The current forecast calls for annual growth of 9 percent on average, reaching a market value of Rs.6,38,773.35 crore ($173.7 billion) by 2013, from estimated sales of Rs.450,731.43 crore ($114.5 billion) in 2008. Growth in Driver Assistance, Safety Systems, and Entertainment is expected to be particularly strong, while the Consumer Retail, Powertrain, and Body Electronics segments are forecasted for slower growth.
