Toshiba Corporation(Toshiba), Sony Corporation(Sony) and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) have signed a definitive agreement to form a new joint venture among the companies for the production of high-performance semiconductors, including products for SCEI's PlayStation computer entertainment systems. Toshiba, Sony and SCEI started discussing the possibility of entering into a joint venture last year, and today's agreement follows an October 18, 2007 memorandum of understanding between the parties.

Senior executives in the semiconductor industry expect only moderate revenue growth for the sector for this year and 'volatile' profitability for the next five years, according to survey by consultancy group KPMG.

India plans more tech institutes, ignores electronics sector

The government is adding three more branches to the Indian Institutes of Technology, but largely ignored electronics industry concerns in an updated technology policy. The research network now includes seven technology institutes. Two additonal Indian Institutes of Science also will be formed.

Israeli semiconductor sales reach $2.9 bn in '07

Sales of semiconductors by Israeli chip makers reached $2.9 billion in 2007, including exports from foreign owned fabs, such as Intel's. The data is based on a survey conducted by Israel's Manufacturing Association, presented at a conference this week organized by the local High Tech CEO Forum, which acts in the framework of the The Israeli Center for Management.

Intersil opens new design center in Hangzhou, China

Intersil Corp. has established a new design and application center in Hangzhou, China that will develop reference designs and provide system-level application support. The new design center is part of the company's ongoing strategy to increase its investment and footprint in the China market, and better serve the growing number of local companies that are designing products requiring Intersil's analog ICs.

Intel picks 'Atom' as name for new chip family

Intel Corp has picked "Atom" as the new brand name for its latest microprocessor, the largest semiconductor company said. The Intel Atom processor is the name for the new family of lowpower processors, the brains of digital devices, that will power mobile Internet devices and ultra low-cost and small notebook and desktop personal computers.

China, India Boosts Global Mobile Phone Sales

Gartner Inc of the US has announced results of its survey on the global mobile phone market in 2007. Sales to end-users increased 16% year-on-year (YoY) to 1.15284 billion units. Sales in the fourth quarter (Q4) also rose, as much as in 2007, 16% YoY to 333.05 million units. With many people purchasing their first mobile phones in emerging markets, sales growth was greater in the Chinese and Indian markets, in particular. In mature markets such as Japan and Western Europe, purchasing motivation was higher for cutting-edge models featuring TV tuner, GPS, touch screen and high-resolution camera capabilities, for example, Gartner said.

Brazilian chip industry faces multiple hurdles

The birth of the Brazilian semiconductor industry has been protracted and difficult but even as the infant takes its first steps it is facing an uphill battle. Critics see outdated technology, an unclear business model and a domestic market too small to create a competitive chip industry. And the training that Brazilian engineers need to get close to industry best practice just serves to expose them to overseas opportunities. But against all odds, the Brazilian semiconductor industry is gaining momentum.

Gartner halves 2008 chip forecast

Citing a weak demand picture and slumping prices, Gartner Inc. has cut its worldwide chip forecast by nearly one-half. In December, Gartner said that the overall IC market would grow by 6.2 percent in 2008 over 2007. In its latest forecast, the firm said the semiconductor market will grow only 3.4 percent in 2008.

Global sales of semiconductors fell in January 2008 to $19.16 billion, down 0.7 percent compared with $19.29 billion sold in January 2007, according to numbers collected by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization. The downward movement stands in contrast to the three-month average data issued by the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association.

iSuppli set to lower IC forecast

Another market research firm is ready to lower its IC forecast. Earlier this week, Gartner Inc. slashed its IC forecast by one-half. And amid signs of reduced demand for NAND flash and Intel Corp.'s financial warning, iSuppli Corp. expects to modestly trim its semiconductor growth forecast for 2008 later this month.

RFID market to hit $1.4B in China, notes ABI

The total market revenue of RFID applications in China will hit nearly $1.4 billion this year, according to ABI Research. Today, China boasts not just the world's largest RFID-enabled government ID card initiative, but a wide range of other RFID application projects in transportation ticketing, animal tagging, anti-counterfeiting, real-time location systems (RTLS), asset tracking, e-ticketing and contactless payments.
