SIA to revise IC forecast amid snafu

Here's a major forecast snafu: Citing better-than-expected DRAM figures, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has revised its worldwide semiconductor sales figures for 2007. The data reflects upward revisions in the DRAM sales data for the period January through September 2007. The revisions were made by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS).

AMD opens fourth R&D center in India

Months after it announced the expansion of its existing R&D center here, AMD Inc. has announced the opening of a fourth R&D center in Hyderabad. The new center will focus on next-generation graphics and computing solutions, the company said.

Today, companies in the semiconductor ecosystem, from design through manufacturing and test, are doing something the industry as a whole hasn't done before: They are collaborating. The interdependencies among all aspects of the chip development process mean that greater integration, and therefore greater collaboration, is required. One area that has been leading the way for some time has been the connection between design and test.

India's efforts to become a chip manufacturing hub may still be restricted to plans and blueprints but the country is attracting significant investments directed at setting up facilities to assemble, test, mark and package chips, with companies such as SPEL Semiconductor Ltd, SemIndia Inc., and Tessolve Inc. looking to invest $600 million (Rs2,358 crore) over the next three years in such so-called ATMP facilities.

Infineon, Delphi to work together

Infineon Technologies AG, Europe's second-largest maker of semiconductors, and auto-parts maker Delphi Corp will jointly develop software for cars. The two companies will develop more advanced so-called body control units based on the automotive open system architecture, Neubiberg, Germany-based Infineon said in an e-mailed statement today.

When Carlos Ghosn, the chief executive of the Franco-Japanese alliance of Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co., visited India early in 2007 to do a deal with Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd (M&M), he coined the term "frugal engineering" to highlight the ability of Indian engineers to produce more with less resources.
