Are venture capitalists generally risk-averse?
Source:The Economic Times, January 18 2008
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com

When Sujai Karampuri started soliciting venture capital investment for his fledgling business, Sloka Telecom, in 2005, he was 31 and the company was two years old. Both were too young to be funded, some VCs told him. Some others said the firm would fight a losing battle against giants such as Nortel and Alcatel. Still others were hesitant because the network infrastructure business that Sloka had chosen, was in a downtrend. The start-up approached about a dozen venture capital firms in India, but was declined each time. Mr Karampuri’s experience is typical of hundreds of entrepreneurs in India, who find it nearly impossible to raise venture capital funding for their new businesses despite having a proper business plan and a good team. A growing tribe of business aspirants, as well as many venture capital managers themselves, say VCs adopt a very cautious approach in the country, which is just breaking into the business of start-ups.

India inside?
Source:The Hindu Business Line, January 21 2008
http://www.thehindubusinessline.com
Do Indian software companies targeting the semiconductor industry now have better opportunities to do high value work? Take, for example, mobile phones. Several Indian software companies each develop a part of the software that makes a phone work across the world. But what if one company had the expertise and the marketing strength to make and sell these software designs whole, instead of piecemeal? And what if we had several such companies targeting different areas, across telecom, consumer electronics, computing, power industry and the like? Sounds implausible? Or obvious?

Call for presidential candidates to tackle tech issues
Source:Rick Merritt, EETimes, January 22 2008
http://www.eetimes.com
U.S. presidential candidates need to lay out clear, specific positions on the science and technology issues driving the global economy. That's the view of a growing chorus of technologists who say the candidates are not fully addressing problems such as research funding, education and immigration that impact the future of the electronics industry. Craig Barrett, chairman of Intel Corp., slammed government leaders for failing to heed warnings that the U.S. is losing ground in global competitiveness. In a recent editorial in the San Francisco Chronicle, Barrett said leaders need to fund the 2007 America Competes Act and ease immigration for technically skilled foreign workers, two pressing issues currently ignored in Washington D.C., he claimed.

UK Premier Promises Venture Capital Support To Indian Entrepreneurs
Source:VC Circle, January 22 2008

India has traditionally looked at the US for venture capital support. Most of the foreign VC funds that are active in India are from the US, primarily Silicon Valley, barring a few VC funds from the UK which visit India every year on behalf of TiE. But the UK government thinks it also needs to play its role in helping Indian entrepreneurs by providing the much needed capital to kick start their enterprise.
