When you use an ultrasound machine, the machine transmits waves into your body, which hit the targetted tissues/body parts and bounce back. When they bounce, they are picked up by sensors in the machine which then calculates the distance the numerous different waves have traversed and based on that, puts together an image of the tissue. That’s how, for instance, you can make out how big a foetus has grown over time.
