The 17th International Electronics Forum kicks off today in Dubai, an Emirate energetic in its efforts to become a high-tech hub in a region stereotyped as awash with oil. While skepticism remains, the DSO is taking concrete steps in the right direction, most importantly in education. At the IEF itself, photovoltaics and energy in general loom high on the priority list, as does 22- nm investment and the logic of fab-lite strategies.

Small firms hold key for chip manufacturers
Source:Deccan Chronicle, May 12 2008

While the opportunity bucket for Indian semiconductor suppliers predominantly includes large MNCs such as the Nokias and Ciscos, the chip fraternity can ill afford to ignore smaller, domestic players who may form a big chunk of the available market, experts say. "The few large firms are important to the market. They are not only designing in India but also manufacturing. However, we cannot ignore the 'many small' ones because they will be a huge grow-th engine for the industry going ahead," Bobby Mitra, MD, Texas Instruments India, says. All electronic goods incorporate semiconductors. The domestic demand for electronic products has been rising with the higher disposable income of the Indians.

Experts say TV sales are typically low in summer with about 10% growth because demand spikes for refrigerators and air conditioners at this time. For 27-year-old Bhushan Kalap, prime time on the idiot box was never a priority. This artist from Kandivli, a suburb in Mumbai, would rather play games on his mobile, while the women in the house soaked in the melodrama beamed on TV, courtesy sundry saas-bahu soap operas.

Infrastructure problems will slow earthquake recovery efforts
Source: Bolaji Ojo, EETimes, May 15 2008
http://www.eetimes.com
With China focused on an intense, sometimes brick-by-brick, search for survivors after Monday's (May 12) devastating earthquake, the government is for now deferring efforts to repair 6 damaged infrastructure. The understandable decision could end up limiting the ability of businesses to resume normal manufacturing operations. While most electronic manufacturers in China's Sichuan province at the epicenter of the quake thankfully suffered limited damage to buildings and few employee injuries, observers said plants located in the Chengdu region might not operate at full capacity for some time--at least until the government turns its attention to damaged infrastructure.
