Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), a leading IT company of India, held a press conference in Tokyo Nov 12, 2007 and announced a plan to expand its embedded system business in Japan. The company will build new research and development bases and foster engineers as well as developing contracted embedded software and providing embedded system-related IPs. To be focused are automobile, digital consumer appliance, telecom equipment and OA device areas.

SEMI cuts book-to-bill as business slows

Business is slowing for fab-tool makers despite recent and upbeat IC forecasts. North Americanbased manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted a book-to-bill ratio of 0.83 in October, up from a dismal 0.79 in September, according to SEMI.

Semiconductor industry call for changes in US skilled immigration policies

The president of the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has called on the US immigration authorities to do more to increase the number of skilled workers entering the country. Speaking on a live webcast, George Scalise said that the US had failed to deal with the current problems of getting visas and green cards for workers.

Semiconductor sales will grow at an annual rate of 7.7 per cent until 2010, when they'll exceed $321bn, according to the latest industry figures. The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) says consumers' seemingly insatiable appetite for electronic products is driving this growth.

Freescale Semiconductor Inc, the $6.4-billion global leader in design and manufacture of embedded chips, will now focus on consumer and industrial markets, a top company official said here Monday. 'To accelerate growth, we are strengthening our core businesses by leveraging our expertise and increasing our share in markets like India and China,' said Freescale business operations vice-president Jan Monney at the third Freescale technology forum (FTF) being held here.

CDMA user base up 1.94 million in October

The number of mobile users using code division multiple access technology rose 1.94 million in October with the total CDMA base at 52.99 million as on October 31. Tata Teleservices saw a sharp month-on-month rise of 19.4 per cent in its additions with the company adding 711,245 users in October compared with 595,418 CDMA mobile users a month ago, according to the Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India.

Freescale establishes innovation center in India

Freescale Semiconductor, which has been designing chips and developing software in India since 1998, will next establish here an International Center of Excellence for Innovation. Speaking at a company forum here, Joe Yiu, senior vice president and chairman of the chip maker's Asia-Pacific operations, said Freescale will also increase its engineering workforce here by another 1,500 over the next four years.

ABI Research sees steady growth in RFID sector

Revenues for global RFID markets will jump to $8.4 billion in 2012, up 21 percent CAGR from this year's $3.8 billion, according to ABI Research. "Given the recent amount of activity and anticipation surrounding RFID technology, one might be tempted to believe the RFID market has been experiencing explosive growth," says research director Michael Liard. "But while uptake of full-scale RFID systems remains slower than many in the industry had hoped, steady growth continues. There is an overall sense of cautious optimism in the market.

India's tax system better than China's: PwC

India has a better tax system in place than its neighbour China, with lower tax rates and easier ways of payment, a latest report says. India has a lower total tax rate of 70.6 per cent as compared to China's 73.9 per cent, while it also scores ahead of the fastest growing Economy in terms of compliance time.
