The India Semiconductor Association (ISA), the trade body representing the Indian semiconductor driven industry today announced Vision Summit 2008, the only business leadership conference for leaders in this region. It is to be scheduled on February 18 & 19, 2008 at The Leela Palace, Bangalore with participation from senior executives within and outside India. The theme for this year's Vision Summit is on the evolving domestic market which is the growth driver for the Indian electronics industry. The event will features global speakers and business leaders including, Mr. Azim H. Premji, Chairman Wipro, Dr. Chi-Foon Chan, President & COO Synopsys, Inc, Mr. Malcolm Penn, Chief Executive Future Horizons, Mr. Ashok Soota, Chairman & CEO Mindtree Consulting, Mr. Stanley T. Qimonda revamps production strategy

Amid a DRAM downturn and losses, Qimonda AG has revamped its 200-mm manufacturing strategy. The DRAM maker also plans to end 200-mm production with two foundry partners: Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC) and Winbond Electronics Corp. Germany's Qimonda (Munich) will discontinue its contract manufacturing deal for 200-mm wafers from its former parent, Infineon Technologies AG.

Nanotechnology poised to be the next big economic driver in the Electronics Industry

Israel's technology exports hit by rising materials costs

The annual growth rate for the value of Israel's technology-based exports is going to fall from 20 percent in 2006 to only 7 percent in 2007, according to economists in the Manufacturers Association of Israel. The rising cost of manufacturing materials and components and the weakness of the U.S. dollar are blamed.

ASIC design starts to fall 4% in 2007, says Gartner

The number of ASIC designs taping out in 2007 looks set to be 3,275 down 4 percent from 3,408 ASIC design start tape outs in 2006, according to market research company Gartner Inc. Of the 2007 ASIC design starts about 200 starts made at 65-nanometer design rules or below.

Forrester Sees Green Among U.S. Consumers

Among U.S. consumer electronics buyers, there's an emerging environmentally conscious group that's willing to pay more for green products, a researcher said Monday. Fully 12% of U.S. adults, or 25 million Americans, are willing to pay extra for gadgets that use less energy or come from a company that approaches product design with the environment in mind, Forrester Research said. These "bright green" buyers are the vanguard of an emerging consumer market that will be an attractive target for technology companies.

Indian auto developer gains Spice certification

KPIT Cummins, a prominent Indian software company developing automotive electronics and semiconductor products, has been certified at a higher level for using an auto design language. Automotive Spice is used to evaluate quality and process competencies as well as organizational maturity of software service providers for auto manufacturers.

Japan Continues to Spend Big on Semiconductor Equipment

Japan’s economy is rebounding from difficulties in the late nineties and the early 2000s. According to the Economist, the short-term outlook remains favorable, with real GDP growth forecast at 2.3% in 2007 and averaging 2 percent a year over the next several years. Also, electronic manufacturers in Japan continue to innovate and develop technologies that ever increase the functionality of portable electronic devices.

Moser Baer to set up large grid-connected Solar farm

Moser Baer Photo Voltaic (MBPV), a wholly owned subsidiary of Moser Baer India, has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Rajasthan for setting up of a large solar power project in the state with an estimated generation capacity of 1 ~ 5MW. The project will be the largest grid-connected solar farm in India and entails an investment of around Rs.100 crore at Rs.17.80 crore ($4.5 million) per MW.

Bengal to get its own Silicon Valley

The foundation for West Bengal's own Silicon Valley will soon be laid off Rajarhat near Kolkata airport. Spearheaded by NRI scientist Santosh Mukherjee, the Santech research valley will come up through tie-ups between US-based Santech International Inc. and international organisations, including reputed foreign varsities. Earlier, the company had tied up with IIT Kharagpur to set up the San Tech IIT Resource and Development Initiative.

Semiconductor equipment sales to reach $41.7 billion in 2007

The forecast indicates that, following 23 percent market growth in 2006, the equipment market will grow three percent in 2007. Survey respondents expect the market to decline about two percent in 2008, and then post growth in the high single digits in 2009 and 2010 to reach $47.99 billion in 2010. "Sales of semiconductor manufacturing, testing, assembly and packaging equipment are at levels slightly above last year, and will result in 2007 being the industry’s second strongest year on record," said Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI.

2008 capital spending to shake IC industry foundation, IC Insights reports

Tying two seemingly unrelated situations together, market research firm IC Insights called attention to the fact that both General Motors and Ford Motor Co. said this year they would cut back fleet sales, while in October, semiconductor foundry United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) said in its Q3 financial report that its 2008 capex would be lower than 2007 to focus on increasing profitability.

Finland, China strengthen nanotech collaboration

General Motors ties up with IIT Kharagpur for research

The partners also announced that a new educational curriculum would be jointly developed leading to a post-graduate degree in these fields. General Motors Corp, global automakers, today announced setting up a new Collaborative Research Lab (CRL) in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur to carry out research in areas of electronics, controls and software.

Bosch expands heavily in India

Future Horizons expects rosier 2008 for semiconductor industry

Semiconductor market research firm Future Horizons expects the industry to do better in 2008 compared to this year based on slightly improved ASPs and double-digit unit growth. For 2008, Future Horizons expects 10 percent unit growth and a modest 2 percent increase in ASPs.

Gartner: Tough times ahead as industry shifts to 32nm

Market watcher Gartner Inc. has pulled down its forecast for the semiconductor industry for this year and next, warning times will only get tougher as the industry moves to 32nm process technology. The industry could still slip into recession next year, depending on issues in the broader economy, analysts said at an annual briefing this week.

India world's third largest economy: OECD

Economic growth is losing steam in the industrialised world after a strong run and the US Economy is slowing hard but not sliding into recession, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said on Thursday. In a twice-yearly report, the OECD said China, India, Russia and other rising stars would continue to grow fast if not quite as furiously as before, and that the financial market troubles were the biggest, and simply unquantifiable, risk right now.
