Indian semi market grew 15% in 2009, says study

The domestic market for electronics in India is growing so rapidly that electronics should be on
the national agenda, according to the India Semiconductor Association (ISA). An ISAcommissioned
study found that the Indian market was worth $5.4 billion in 2009 and is poised
to grow to more than $8 billion in 2011, a 22 percent compounded annual growth rate.

Biggest solar power plant commissioned

India's first-ever 3 Mw solar photovoltaic power plant, erected by the Karnataka Power
Corpora-tion Limited (KPCL), the state-owned power generating company, was dedicated to
the nation at Yalesandra village in Kolar district on Thursday. The plant, which uses modular
crystalline technology to generate solar energy, has been set up at a cost of Rs 59.5 crore.
This is the biggest solar power plant in the country today. The previous claimant to the honour
was set up in West Bengal, which had only a 1 Mw capacity.

Broadcom to acquire Innovision Research & Technology's for its NFC know-how

Broadcom Corporation's subsidiary, Broadcom International Ltd., has agreed to terms with the
board of Innovision Research & Technology PLC to make an all-cash offer to acquire all of the
issued and to be issued shares of Innovision, the company is a leader in near-field
communication (NFC) technology.

National Semi buys GTronix

National Semiconductor Corp. has acquired the technology of GTronix Inc., a fabless chip
maker specializing in programmable and adaptive analog sensory processing technology.
GTronix (Fremont, Calif.) provides low power solutions for noise cancellation in mobile
applications such as wireless handsets and audio accessories. Terms of the transaction are not
being disclosed.

IBM to set up 75 centres of excellence in 60 cities

Technology giant IBM today said it will set up 75 new centres of excellence (CoE) at
engineering colleges across 60 cities in India, which will train students on various softwares.
The locations for the 75 new CoEs will be selected from among the top 300 engineering
colleges in the country and will span 20 states, IBM said in a statement.

India's R&D, tech dominance to fill competitive gap with China

India ranks second among a list of 26 nations from both developed and emerging in the Global
Manufacturing Competitiveness Index. Its strength in R&D, and technology integration abilities
will enable the country to bridge the gap with China, who ranks first. According to a joint study
by consulting firm Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and U.S. Council on Competitiveness, over the
next five years India will bridge the gap with China.
